Social Media Grand Slam: An analysis of #FedererVsDjokovic at Wimbledon!

In a summer dominated by football, the Wimbledon, lawn tennis’ most revered contest, received lesser attention that it deserved and normally gets. Luckily, a thriller of a final between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer on the last day of the tournament saw it grab its rightful place among Twitter trends. It also helped that the evening of the gentlemen’s singles final, the most watched event, was a rest day for the football world cup teams.

Even though Djokovic took home the title and regained the number one spot in the men’s rankings in the process, Federer was the champion on Twitter. The battle on Social Media was as hard fought as the five-setter on the Centre court of the All England Lawn Tennis and Crouquet Club, with Federer beating Djokovic by only a few thousand mentions.

The match also saw a star-studded turnout, with David and Victoria Beckham, Prince William and Kate Middleton in attendance. On Twitter, this mixed doubles match far superseded the actual mixed doubles final between Nenad Zimonjic / Samantha Stosur and Max Mirnyi / Hao-Ching Chan. Stosur and Zimonjic claimed the sporting honours, while the Beckhams comprehensively beat British Royalty and stamped their dominance on Social Media .

The Marvel Universe also had a field day as some of the Avengers assembled courtside along with Wolverine for company; Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) received a considerable number of mentions on Twitter.
